We are distinctive in the wide range of research we undertake as a department, in particular in our application of core mathematics to other disciplines such as climate science, biology, and computer science. As such we offer expert supervision on a diverse array of mathematics PhD projects.

The University regularly advertises doctoral research projects covering specific topics. Alternatively, you can propose your own project that aligns with our areas of expertise.

Areas of expertise

Our research, particularly in applied mathematics, covers a very wide range of areas. It is organised into several research groups, which overlap and interact significantly:

  • Applied Statistics
  • Mathematics of Planet Earth
  • Complex Fluids and Theoretical Polymer Physics
  • Data Assimilation and Inverse Problems
  • Mathematical Biology
  • Number Theory
  • Numerical Analysis and Computational Modelling
  • Analysis
  • Stochastic Analysis, Dynamical Systems, and Applied Probability.

If your proposed PhD topic falls into one of these areas, find out more about how to submit an application.

Funded PhD opportunities

Mathematics for our Future Climate

Are you ready to be at the forefront of mathematical solutions for climate challenges? The Mathematics for our Future Climate Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) programme is an EPSRC-funded interdisciplinary initiative that harnesses the power of mathematics to address the urgent issues presented by climate change. The CDT offers 4-year funded PhD studentships covering fees and a maintenance grant for living expenses.
