Choosing Environmental Management and Sustainability

Alice Hood, a recent graduate, chose to study at the University of Reading because she was attracted to the whole package that it had to offer.

“Having studied Environmental Science at A-level, I was eager to continue my environmental studies at university. The Environmental Management course caught my attention because I felt like it aligned with my passion for the environment and addressed sustainability challenges. The diverse range of modules offered allowed me to tailor the course to my interests and expand my knowledge and skills, preparing me for a career in the environmental sector.”

Alice adds:

“In choosing where to study, the university campus was important as I wanted to find enjoyment in where I studied; I felt that the Reading campus had a great vibrant, community feel, as well as being beautiful and green which was a key selling point for me!”

Field work opportunities and projects

Alice has valued the field work opportunities that are embedded in the course. She particularly enjoyed the residential field trips which allowed her to learn more about field techniques, and the challenges that different types of environments face.

“My course cohort were fortunate enough to visit Suffolk and Pembrokeshire for residential field courses. On these trips, we gained lots of hands-on experience in a range of ecological and environmental techniques including data collection, analysis and evaluation through assessment and monitoring exercises. It also gave us a great opportunity to meet professionals in various parts of the environment and sustainability industry.”

Alice’s choice of final year dissertation reflected her diverse interests and fascination with the global social impacts of environmental issues.

“My dissertation allowed me to investigate the impact of climate change on women’s access to healthcare services in Malawi and Bangladesh. I chose this topic because I wanted to combine my passion for feminist issues with the challenges of the changing climate.”

Professional Placement Year

Alice undertook a Professional Placement Year as part of her degree at the well-known car manufacturer Toyota (GB) PLC, as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Affairs Assistant. This experience was a game changer, helping Alice understand how her knowledge and skills can be applied in a business environment.

“As the CSR & Environmental Affairs assistant, I had numerous roles and responsibilities which allowed me to learn a great deal, both professionally and personally. One of the highlights of my year was managing the corporate charity partnership with the Motor Neurone Disease Association, through which I helped to raise over £100,000. I also took ownership of projects such as corporate volunteering, ‘Green Month 2023’ and managing the Toyota Community Fund.”

Alice adds:

“I highly recommend undertaking a placement because the experience you can gain is truly invaluable! During my placement, I was able to develop skills in project management, teamwork, interpersonal and organisational skills. The experience also increased my confidence, especially in a corporate setting where networking with stakeholders was crucial to my success.”

With ambitions to pursue a career in sustainability consultancy and corporate responsibility, Alice is looking forward to travelling around Central America before starting a Master's degree in Sustainability and Consultancy.
