The University of Reading is a major centre of research and training to tackle the environmental science and sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. We are delighted to offer up to 190 funded PhD places over the next five years, starting in 2025, for UK and international students.

Working with a range of industry, academic research, public sector and other partners, we undertake cutting-edge research and deliver doctoral training to develop the next generation – capable of tackling pressing global environmental challenges.

NERC Climate System and Biodiversity Science CROCUS Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA)

Training a new generation of environmental scientists to become interdisciplinary experts with strong quantitative skills, creative thinkers, and leaders in sustainability and inclusivity. Such knowledge and skills are critical in delivering the ambitious Net Zero, adaptation and restoration plans adopted by governments and businesses worldwide.

BBSRC FoodBioSystems DLA

Following the successful FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Partnership, the DLA is developing bioscientists with in-depth knowledge and technical expertise of food systems and biological processes across the agri-food system, from pre-farm to post-fork, to transform the food value chain and address sustainability challenges.

NERC SCENARIO Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)

Providing excellent training in quantitative environmental science, to ensure our students become the independent thinkers that our society needs to understand the interactions between people and environmental change, and to evaluate and manage environmental risk and sustainability.

Advancing the Frontiers of Earth System Predictions (AFESP) Doctoral Training Programme

Enhancing our capabilities in global data assimilation, simulation and analysis to deliver a new class of accurate, reliable and usable forecasts, with a wide range of novel scientific and societal applications.

EPSRC Mathematics for our Future Climate Centre for Doctoral Training (MFCCDT)

Training highly skilled mathematicians to become future leaders in innovative research, developing environmental prediction technologies, interpreting very large datasets relating to the Earth system, and modelling risk associated with extreme weather and climate change.

NERC AI-INTERVENE Doctoral Focal Award (DFA)

The AI for Unlocking Datasets for Biodiversity Assessment and Prediction (AI-INTERVENE) DFA is training a new generation of AI-empowered data scientists. They will be equipped with the required AI and data science tools, ecological knowledge and wider interdisciplinary skillset to unlock the full potential of the wealth of existing and emerging sources of biodiversity data.

Additional funded doctoral opportunities

Other PhD funding schemes exist where the student submits a research proposal that could relate to environmental sustainability.

 

Such schemes include the AHRC South, West and Wales DTP for the Arts and Humanities, ESRC SEDarc DTP for the Social Sciences, University of Reading International PhD Studentships, China Scholarship Council Studentships and the Felix Scholarship.
