Understanding item information
Example:
What is a Call Number?
The Call Number is the code used to shelve an item. It is usually made up of a string of words, numbers and letters indicating the exact shelf location e.g. 330 BEG.
It is important that you write down the whole Call Number to enable you to find an item in the LRC.
Example Call Numbers for books
Call number | Description |
330 BEG |
330 - this number stands for a subject, in this case 'Economics' - other books on economics will be found at this number BEG is the authormark - it is usually taken from the first three letters of the author's surname or from the title. Within each number the books are put in alphabetical order by the authormark, so 330 BEG will be shelved before 330 MUN This book will be found in the normal-size book section |
Folio 330 BEG |
Folio - if a Call Number has the prefix "Folio" it indicates that the book is A4-sized or larger and is shelved in the Folio section on the floor indicated in the Location column 330 - see the explanation above BEG - see the explanation above |
When searching for journals you will see Call Numbers starting with Periodical or Periodical Folio. These prefixes indicate the section on the floor you need to look in:
- the prefix "Periodical" indicates the normal size periodical section
- the prefix "Periodical Folio" indicates the folio (larger) size periodical section.
Loan type
Enterprise will also show you how long you can borrow an item for (if at all). This example shows there is one 6-hour loan copy and two 7-day loan copies.
See How long can I keep items? for details.
Location
This column shows the current location of each copy. In this example all the copies are available to collect from the shelves. If any copies had been borrowed it would show you the date they were due for return.
What if all the copies are on loan?
You can place a hold on an item on loan to someone else. For more information see Placing & cancelling a hold using Enterprise.
