Colonel Winston Williams

Background
Colonel Winston Williams is the Head for the Department of Law at the United States Military Academy at West Point and Co-Director of the Lieber Institute for Law and Warfare. He began his military service as an Engineer Officer in 1998 and transitioned to the Judge General’s Corps upon graduation from law school in 2004. Colonel Williams has served in a number of legal positions advising commanders on a broad spectrum of legal issues related to criminal law, international law, and administrative law. Of particular note, he deployed to Iraq from 2006 to 2007 with 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. Additionally, he served as an Associate Professor of International and Operational Law at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Colonel Williams holds a LL.M in Military Law from the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Tennessee College of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Florida A&M University. He has served as the Managing Editor for Lieber Studies Series (Oxford University Press) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Articles of War blog. Colonel Williams is the author of many publications in the fields of military law and the law of armed conflict.
