Areas of interest

Shelley is the author of the novels Jubilee and Vigilante (both Weidenfeld and Nicolson), and is currently working on her third book. Her fiction has explored issues such as immigration and the construction of Britishness, the experience of motherhood and what it means to live under patriarchy. Her writing is preoccupied with the many ways in which humans are connected to each other, despite all that seems to separate us. Jubilee was a Radio 4 Book at Bedtime, a Richard and Judy book club pick and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize. A trained journalist, Shelley has written features and book reviews for national newspapers.

Teaching

Shelley teaches on the English Literature department's Creative Writing modules, and on its Persuasive Writing course. She has been a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the University of Reading, and elsewhere has taught and mentored for Faber Academy, the Arvon Foundation, Writers' Centre Norwich and others.
