Schools

The Archive's holdings are available to Secondary Schools seeking to enrich their German or History curriculum with original and unusual materials from East Germany. Our Blog serves as a good introduction to individual documents and objects from the Archive and explains the political, cultural, and social contexts which can be explored through them. For schools who are interested, we may also be able to offer topic-specific posters for classroom work or workshops run by academic staff. Feedback from previous workshops has highlighted that we are not only successful in topic work but also in language teaching where required.

"I really am so grateful [...] for your excellent workshop today. You had gone to so much trouble to prepare a really interesting and motivational series of activities for our students [...]. Your workshop slotted in with our scheme of work on media perfectly and the girls now have lots of new vocabulary to use [...]. In particular, I think that our more able girls will have found the session very motivational - and hope that it may in turn help us raise take-up of A-level and IB German. We would love to work with you again [...]." Alison Seabrook Moore, Head of German Department, The Abbey School

"Thank you for coming to Wallingford to take the session this afternoon on Das Leben der Anderen - it really opened students' eyes to some of the subtleties of the film, and the discussion today will be genuinely useful in exam preparation when they need to be able, among other things, to give detailed, concrete examples of how different techniques are used to convey key messages. It was good to see the students gaining confidence gradually, and they will now be equipped with some very useful language for analysing other parts of the film." Vivienne Arnold, Curriculum Co-ordinator for Modern Languages, Wallingford School
