Every year, students at the University nominate staff who have gone ‘above and beyond’ for a Reading Students’ Union (RSU) Excellence Award.

This year, the new School of Humanities – comprising the Departments of Classics, History, English Language and Applied Linguistics, English Literature, and Languages and Cultures – is extremely proud of its number of nominations.

A total of 55 nominations were received for Teaching Excellence and another 7 for the ‘Academic Tutor’ and ‘Diverse and Inclusive Teaching’ categories.

RSU Teaching Excellence Award: School of Humanities

We are delighted to announce that the winner of 2024's RSU Teaching Excellence Award for the School of Humanities is Dr Doukissa Kamini, Lecturer in Classics.

Here, Doukissa gives her reaction to receiving the award:

"When the news that I had won the 2024 RSU Teaching Excellence Award for the School of Humanities reached me, my initial surprise gave way to a great delight and honour! That day has certainly been one of the most rewarding and special moments of my career!

I am chuffed to have received this award and I take it as an opportunity to celebrate our students’ amazing strength, passion and dedication. Nothing would be possible without them. Our students are the reason, the motivation, and the goal, and I am grateful to them for this award.

We in Classics dedicate much time to researching the amazing labyrinth of the ancient world and its diverse faces and colours. For me, teaching is the core and ultimate goal of my academic role, a collaborative and dynamic act which empowers students and enables me to bring the fruits of my research to life in an inclusive and collaborative way.

Both in the classroom and in supervisions, I am privileged and honoured to see our students become the centre of the learning process, embrace current research trends with their fresh and innovative approaches, and produce original outcomes which enhance their academic development and future employability. I shall gratefully strive to continue supporting them in their learning journey."
