Linking Teaching and Research

The linkage between teaching and research is both a complex pedagogic and policy issue. These pages offer a few pointers towards resources to help explore this theme.

It is important to realise the wide range of forms this linkage can take, and to develop a language for describing them. Mick Healey of the Centre for Active Learning (CeAL) at the University of Gloucestershire, building upon the work of Ron Griffiths, conceptualised the interaction as varying across two dimensions (Healey, 2005):

In this model all these forms of teaching and learning should have a role in Higher Education; usually to some degree they already do, but giving ourselves a language with which to describe exactly what we mean and do is the first step in analysing current practice and reflecting upon possible changes.
