Thomas leads the Archaeology Department’s field school module and teaches on post-excavation, archaeological practice and careers.Background
Thomas has a background in field archaeology and has worked in various positions in professional archaeology. Thomas worked as a commercial archaeologist across the south of England, becoming a site supervisor and eventually working as a Project Manager for Pre-Construct Archaeology’s Winchester office. Notably, Thomas lead a number of projects in Winchester, including excavations on a significant section of the city defences, excavations within the Northern Roman Cemetery and at the large scale, multi-period site at the Barton Farm development.In 2020 he became Senior Archaeologist for Hampshire County Council, a curatorial role which provided expert archaeological advice to planning authorities across Hampshire and the South of England; overseeing the work of commercial archaeologists, maintaining the Historic Environment Record and liaising with local and regional heritage groups.
Between 2012 and 2014 Thomas undertook a Masters of Research at the University of Winchester, undertaking research into the houses of the military orders. Following this time, Thomas contributed to teaching at University of Winchester on subjects including field archaeology, medieval monastic archaeology, development of archaeology and GIS.
