When Olivia Turner Jones was choosing where to study, the University of Reading was a natural choice.
“The University’s beautiful green campus attracted me, along with the amazing facilities like the library and the teaching and research labs.”
Being a student in the Department of Animal Sciences has given Olivia plenty of academic opportunities and support.
“I love the way we are constantly building scientific skills through practical and classroom project work.
We go to the University’s farm quite often to participate in research projects, helping us understand how to plan projects and collect data – for example, observing cow behaviour and welfare or doing a nutrition study with chicks. The lecturers here are really knowledgeable and friendly as well.”
Olivia has fully embraced student life by joining societies and socials at the University.
“I’ve been Co-President of the Christian Union and a member of the Arts and Crafts Society, which has been fun. I also love walks around the campus lake, meeting friends in the cafes and bars on campus, and the occasional trip to Oxford, Winchester and London – making the most of Reading’s excellent transport links.”
Looking ahead, Olivia is going to undertake a placement year as part of her degree, and has benefited from plenty of support developing her CV and networking skills, giving her the confidence to apply.
“I’m lucky enough to have secured a placement at Ridgeway Biologicals, a company who develop and manufacture emergency vaccines for animals and fish. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and learning more about the science behind vaccines.
The great thing is, I found out about Ridgeway Biologicals when we were taken on a field trip to their labs, and it inspired me to apply for a placement there. The field trips that form part of the course at Reading are both educational and eye opening to different employers and careers out there. We have been to feed manufacturers, wildlife parks, labs and farms.”
