Think deeply and critically about the behaviours and values of people and organisations, and examine how these play out in a professional setting, with our BA Philosophy, Business and Ethics with Placement Experience degree.
This course is offered jointly by the triple-accredited Henley Business School and the University of Reading’s Department of Philosophy. With a strong focus on business ethics, the programme will help you apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios, and its versatility will enhance your employability and help prepare you for your career after graduation.
During this course, you will:
- gain a firm understanding of the practice, concepts, and theories of business management, as well as the skills and competencies that will help you apply them.
- confront your deepest beliefs and assumptions in a philosophical way to inform you about current debates in philosophy. You’ll develop a sense of the significance of philosophical thinking in dealing with contemporary issues.
- combine rigorous analysis of core philosophical and ethical theory with practical and real-world applications in business contexts.
The study of ethics forms an integral component of both the philosophical and business sides of the programme, preparing you to think through the ethical and commercial dilemmas that real-world decision-makers face.
Professional placement
This four-year degree includes an integrated, year-long work placement between your second and final year of study.
Supported by our dedicated placement team, you'll gain real-world experience and a range of transferable skills that are highly valued in the workplace. Your placement will enable you to put your newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice, and also provide opportunities for you to build your network.
We have excellent links with a diverse range of employers from industry, the public sector and the charity sector, meaning that we can help you find placements for a variety of career paths.
Over the years, students in the Department of Philosophy have completed a wide range of placements. Roles have included:
- Education and Engagement Assistant
- HR Intern
- Communications Co-ordinator
- Azure Specialist.
Students have worked at organisations such as the House of Commons, the University of Reading, Microsoft, and Enterprise Mobility.
Recent placements have also enabled students to examine philosophical issues in the workplace – for example, working at a zoo to learn more about the ethical treatment of animals.
If you would prefer to study this course without a placement year, you can choose our three-year BA Philosophy, Business and Ethics course.
Placement support
Our dedicated placement co-ordinator will support you throughout securing a placement, during the placement, and while transitioning back to university life.
From your first year, we will guide you through the career planning process and support you in identifying paid placements suited to your individual career interests. We'll also review your CV and application forms, build your confidence for interviews, tests and assessment centres, and help you prepare for receiving feedback.

Meanwhile, your business modules will provide a strong foundation in strategy, marketing, and organisational behaviour as well as either accounting or data analytics.
As you progress through the course, you’ll gain a deeper awareness of philosophical thinking, the skills of argument and presentation, and the methodology of philosophy. You’ll also explore the nature, origin and limits of human knowledge. You’ll study business ethics in depth, and have the opportunity to select from a range of other modules offered by Henley Business School.
You’ll also work with organisations on live projects – for example, projects linked to social responsibility. And in addition to your focus on philosophy, business, and ethics, you’ll have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of optional modules outside of your core subject areas.
