National AI award nomination for Reading Research
09 September 2024
The University of Reading is proud to announce that it has been named as a finalist in the category of AI Business of the Year in the National AI Awards 2024, as part of an industry-academia collaboration with BT Group, Cardiff University, and the University of Reading.
The National AI Awards, an annual event supported by the UK government, celebrates excellence and innovation in artificial intelligence across the United Kingdom. This year's ceremony will take place on September 12th, 2024, at Adastral Park – BT’s R&D centre in Ipswich.
The industry-academic collaboration, led by Dr Shixuan Wang (University of Reading), with Dr Carla Di Cairano-Gilfedder (BT Group), and Professor Aris Syntetos (Cardiff University), has developed an innovative AI solution for BT Fleet Solutions, which stands out for its practical applications in three key areas:
1. Visualization of the potential pathways to failure, to aid transparent decision-making
2. Development of cost-effective maintenance policies
3. Advanced forecasting methods for repair time categories, optimizing garage maintenance scheduling
This AI framework has potential applications beyond automobile engine maintenance, as it can also benefit fleet management for ships and aircraft, as well as companies utilizing high-value machinery.
"We are thrilled that Dr Wang's ground breaking work has been recognized at this national level," said Professor Simonetta Longhi, Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Reading: "This achievement not only highlights the cutting-edge research happening at the University of Reading but also demonstrates our commitment to fostering industry partnerships that drive innovation and create real-world impact."
The National AI Awards received a significant number of nominations this year, making the short-listing of this collaborative project a notable accomplishment. This places the University of Reading among esteemed companies, institutions, and individuals at the forefront of AI innovation in the UK.
