UN debate on suspending Russia from Human Rights Council
07 April 2022
As the United Nations General Assembly debates the possiblity of suspending Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, leading expert on the UNHRC, Professor Rosa Freedman has commented on the debate and its significance.
Professor Rosa Freedman, Professor of Law Conflict and Global Development at the University of Reading said:
“Suspending Russia is one small step towards the UN showing that it is taking a stand against the atrocities and genocide being perpetrated in Ukraine. But this is too little on its own. The UN needs to take action for collective self-defense under Article 51 of its Charter. But more worryingly countries like Iran, DPRK (North Korea), Syria, and other grave abusers defended Russia in the UN General Assembly today, accusing the West of besieging Russia and punishing it for its foreign policy.”
