University in talks with Wokingham council over new Local Plan

Following Wokingham Borough Council's announcement on pursuing alternatives to a garden town at Grazeley, the University of Reading will be working alongside the council as they review opportunities for new employment and homes between the villages of Shinfield, Arborfield and Sindlesham, south of the M4.

As part of this review, an option is being explored to deliver new homes and an expansion of the Thames Valley Science Park on land around Hall Farm. These proposals are at a very early stage and discussions with Wokingham Borough Council are ongoing.

Should any development proceed on this land, we would be keen to ensure it reflects our values, as expressed in our current University Strategy, alongside reflecting aspirations for upfront infrastructure, a commitment to be carbon neutral and creating strong public transport links.

Professor Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, said: "We are only at the very first stages of discussion, but will ensure that students, staff and the wider community are engaged in the process. We are committed to working with and listening to others, particularly our partners and neighbours in Reading and Wokingham.

"Importantly, any plans that lead to a change in the use of farming facilities and resources around Hall Farm would only occur alongside significant investment and improvement of academic and agricultural research and teaching capacity and facilities overall.

"We are one of the world's leading centres for the study of environment and climate change, and we hope to reflect this in any emerging vision for the area, in keeping with our commitment to reduce overall emissions and move towards a zero-carbon society."
