Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to:

  • Reflect on professional practice in the workplace while extending the knowledge gained in the first two years of the programme;
  • Understand a business context related to their considered career destination and employability;
  • Develop an understanding and skills of working in a business environment;
  • Reflect and consider the impact of contemporary issues impacting his/her own career journey including professional ethics, accreditations and/ or technology advancements.

This module is delivered at the University of Reading and requires undertaking a work placement of a minimum of 4 weeks / 150 hours. It is the responsibility of the student to secure a placement prior to completing the assignment.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Identify areas of self-improvement within a professional environment;
  2. Critically evaluate the observed work in relation to relevant professional codes of practice;
  3. Reflect on the changing nature of the Real Estate sector considering contemporary issues and the long-term consequence these have for future career planning.
  4. Explain how a student’s skills fit into the organisation, and identify the criteria necessary for enhancing value to the organisation in the context of graduate recruitment;
  5. Appraise and apply different reflective development practices.

Module content

In this module, students will examine the value of reflective practice in the workplace, consider different reflective practice theories and evaluate their effectiveness against their own understanding in identifying their professional development needs.

Students will complete a professional placement to contextualise their academic learning from previous years, to gain work experience, and to apply reflective practice.  This will be discussed in classroom settings with course colleagues to broaden their industry awareness and personal development.
