Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module is based on the experience that students will gain whilst working within a clinical service. Students will spend at least 2 days a week across the academic year putting into practice the skills they have learnt during their PWP training. The clinical service is most likely to be one from within the NHS, and the number of days per week will vary depending on the needs of that service. Students will be exposed to a wide range of learning opportunities, including session planning, observation of others practice as well as being observed themselves.

As trainee PWPs, students are expected to operate in a stepped care, high-volume environment. During training, trainee PWPs should carry a reduced caseload, with the number of cases seen depending on their stage in training, building up to a maximum of 60-80% of a qualified PWP’s caseload at the end of training.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Reflect on their own and others clinical practice
  2. Demonstrate the development of clinical insight over the period of the placement
  3. Organise a report so as to demonstrate development over a timeline

Module content

2 or more days per week in clinical practice, assessment, treatment, supervision and observations, evidenced via supporting documents in the Reflective Report.

Preparation for submission of a Reflective Report (Summative assessment), including draft submissions of Wellbeing Diary entries.

PWPs will develop their skills in managing a caseload, operating safely and to high standards and use supervision to aid their clinical decision-making. Through supervision, trainee PWPs will learn recognise the limitations to their competence and role and direct people to resources appropriate to their needs, including step-up to high-intensity therapy, when beyond their competence and role.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

Students will be engaged in clinical practice during this module, and will learn through observation, being observed, as well as individual supervision of their work. There are no University delivered teaching days as part of this module.

This module is a placement or study abroad module and therefore the teaching and learning activities will predominantly, or entirely, take place away from the University of Reading. Your host organisation will normally advise you of the associated hours of your placement or year abroad. Assessment

Requirements for a pass

Students need to achieve an overall module mark of 40% to pass this module.

Summative assessment

Type of assessment Detail of assessment % contribution towards module mark Size of assessment Submission date Additional information
Written coursework assignment Reflective report 100 3,000-4,000 words Assessment is by a reflective report where students evidence their achievement of the learning outcomes and provide a reflective commentary on their clinical development and SMART wellbeing approaches. The reflective report must include a log of placement days with evidence of meeting the minimum hours within the clinical placement. In addition, a log of 80 clinical contact hours, a log of 20 clinical skills supervision hours and a log of 20 case management supervision hours must be included.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

The University policy statement on penalties for late submission can be found at: https://www.reading.ac.uk/cqsd/-/media/project/functions/cqsd/documents/qap/penaltiesforlatesubmission.pdf

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Formative assessment

Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.

Students have the opportunity to submit a draft Wellbeing Diary entry, before submission of their Reflective Report, to obtain formative feedback.
