Overview
Module aims and purpose
This module aims to support practitioners to critically reflect on their prescribing-related experiences and workplace-based learning. Each practitioner will be assigned an academic tutor who will agree the focus and approach to assessment to meet individual learning needs.
This module is aimed at practising healthcare professionals who are working as prescribers (supplementary or independent) who can underpin their workplace-based prescribing practice with a professional portfolio of evidence. For newly qualified prescribers who have not yet written a prescription this module aims to support the transition from healthcare professional to prescribing healthcare professional by supporting continuing professional development and workplace-based learning. The portfolio will support practitioners to reflect on their experiences by mapping evidence to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Competency Framework for all Prescribers. Practitioners can choose to map their learning to a second, national or international, professional framework to support their practice and/or revalidation.
The module can be studied stand-alone or as part of the MSc in Advancing Healthcare Practice. A significant proportion of the module is workplace-based learning and practitioners are required to be working at an approved workplace which allows them the opportunities to document their progress.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Continually advance own knowledge, skills and behaviours through continuing professional development and life-long learning
- Develop a personal learning contract, including identification and prioritisation of appropriate learning objectives and approaches to assessment to meet defined outcomes
- Demonstrate professional learning against the agreed learning contract with defined outcomes
- Critically reflect on knowledge, skills and behaviours, and the practitioner’s role in relation to the agreed field of practice
- Apply the competencies described in the Competency Framework for all Prescribers to practice and other relevant competency frameworks
- Critically analyse the literature within the agreed field of practice
Module content
Each practitioner will be assigned an academic tutor who will agree the field of practice and approach to assessment to meet individual learning needs. Practitioners will be encouraged to identify appropriate training to meet their own professional needs, identified in their learning contract. Students will have tutorials at set intervals with their academic tutor to determine the focus, agree the learning contract and monitor progress prior to submission.
Examples of appropriate learning that could be included:
- Non-credit bearing CPD courses
- CPD study days and/or conferences
- Work based training
- Workplace-based assessments
- Structured reading applied to the field of practice
- Workplace-based assessments
- Written assignments
Note that work that has been submitted as part of another formal credit-bearing qualification may not be used towards this module, except in accordance with the University’s Policy and Procedure for the Recognition of Prior Learning.
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
This module is largely self-directed by the practitioner to meet the learning objectives. Practitioners will have tutorials at set intervals with their academic tutor to determine the focus, agree the learning contract and monitor progress prior to submission. The module should be focused on workplace experiences and learning related to prescribing; the specific content of the work-based learning component may therefore vary between practitioners and the table below shows approximate hours for guidance.
As this module is an individualised learning experience, and may be studied over two to six months, the distinction of hours by term is not possible. The hours shown for semester 1 below are spread over the entire module.
This module is taught to three different cohorts of students - in Semester 1, Semester 2 and Summer Vacation. The 200 study hours are listed for the first iteration of teaching in Semester 1, and these same study hours are repeated for the second and third iteration of teaching in Semester 2 and Summer Vacation.

At least 4 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
- the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three working days of the deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.
