Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module aims to: 

  • Understand the context of leadership development at both organisational and individual level.  
  • Develop the capability of individuals to plan, manage and reflect on their individual personal leadership and consider how this can be used to support the leadership development of others. 
  • Encourage development of behavioural skills in individuals to increase the effectiveness and appropriateness of their ability to develop leadership in others. 
  • Recognise the importance of both developing future leaders as well as developing leadership capability within an organisational setting. 
  • Develop an awareness of the ethical, moral and practical issues in relation to developing leadership in others. 

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of a range of different theoretical models and approaches to learning and leadership development. 
  2. Have an appreciation of the organisational context of leadership development. 
  3. Support the leadership development of a colleague. 
  4. Critical analysis in order to engage others, assess the context and decide on the most appropriate leadership development interventions. 
  5. Have an appreciation of communication skills, including questioning, listening and managing differences and conflict.

The module covers the following topics: 

  • Review of programme content 
  • Organisational context 
  • Leadership development 
  • Developing leadership in others 
  • Talent management 
  • Succession planning 

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

The module content is delivered through 2 days of taught sessions, supported by key reading from texts and other sources, practical activities for each topic with group and cohort discussion. Guest speakers may be included in order to study contemporary situations. Case material is included to stretch the practical application of theory and experience. An element of self-reflection is included to build awareness and identify development needs. On-line support material is made available via Canvas.

Study hours

At least 18 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Students need to achieve an overall module mark of 50% to pass this module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

This module is subject to the Penalties for late submission for Postgraduate Flexible programmes policy, which can be found at:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark; 
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Formative assessment

Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.

Workshop activities are undertaken to support formative assessment of the learning. These activities are not assessed for the purposes of the final module mark. This formative assessment takes the form of feedback given to students at workshops on syndicate work, presentations and exercises.
