Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module is specifically focused on the concept of technology as an enabler and provider of competitive advantage as an aspect of digital leadership. 

Digital technology leadership is specifically aimed at developing leadership skills in programme members regarding technology concepts and the application of leadership principles. It aims to develop technology leadership in individuals, teams and organisations.  

 

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to: 

  1. Knowledge of a range of different theoretical work process, technology and design models and technology leadership concepts 
  2. Awareness of different approaches and perspectives of digital technology principles, operating models, governance and leadership 
  3. Application of technology leadership concepts to business cases 
  4. Critical appraisal of technology leadership concepts and development of analytical skills 

Module content

The module covers the following topics: 

  • Technology principles, work and capabilities in the digital age 
  • Technology Innovations and solutions 
  • Digital technology operating model 
  • Technology Solution Design 
  • Digital technology governance 
  • Leadership of Technology and Technologists 

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include working in a whole group of up to 50 with one or two tutors, and in smaller groups of up to 8 programme members. Other learning activities take place in pairs and individual reflection. 

Teaching includes input from tutors, demonstrations of techniques and practice in small groups. Plenary discussion and table discussions are encouraged. Formative and summative feedback is given as appropriate. 

Participants are expected to draw on their practical leadership experience in their own or other organisations to support their learning and their assignments. They have access to the Virtual Learning Environment throughout the programme, until the end of their registration period. 

Programme members are encouraged to keep a personal learning log, paper or electronic, during both this module and the complete programme. 

The contact hours are shown for one semester in the table below for illustrative purpose only. The actual timing will vary depending on your cohort start date. 

Study hours

At least 20 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

This module is subject to the Penalties for late submission for Postgraduate Flexible programmes policy, which can be found at:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark; 
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Formative assessment

Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.
