Overview

Module aims and purpose

The module encourages students to develop self-awareness, and reflect on their core values and drivers. Students will reflect upon their own learning, performance and achievement, and plan for their personal, educational and career development. 

 

Aims: 

In this module, students will develop a better understanding of themselves and their interactions with others.  

 

The module aims to: 

Develop self-awareness in relations to self and others 

Encourage students to better understand their own personal values and beliefs 

Support students to reflect on their own performance and plan for ongoing personal development 

Give an understanding of learning styles and apply to self and others. 

 

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to: 

Explain the nature and process of personal development and recognise the value of personal development for themselves and organisations 

State how to set achievable goals and monitor progress towards these 

Demonstrate self-awareness as an independent, reflective and self-critical learner in a wide range of learning contexts and be able to apply learning to new situations 

Recognise different learning styles and apply to self and others  

Module content

The module covers the following topics: 

Self-awareness in relation to self and others 

Personal Development Planning and goal setting for self 

Learning styles 

 

To meet the apprenticeship standards, the following additional learning outcomes will be covered during the teaching of the module: 

Reflect on own performance, identifying and acting on learning and development needs  

Create Personal Development Plan and demonstrate ongoing commitment to personal development  

Estimate impact on others 

Describe organizational purpose and core values 

Open, approachable, authentic, and able to build trust with others 

Seeks the views of others and values diversity internally and externally 

Positive and adaptable, responding well to feedback and need for change 

 

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching and learning takes place through a blended learning approach. The teaching and learning methods comprise a combination of self-study via a range of online materials on the Canvas learning platform, weekly one-hour virtual seminars with a Learning Coach, and face-to-face workshops with Faculty. 

 

Materials on Canvas include content on-screen, videos, PowerPoint presentations, journal articles, book chapters, practical activities and reflection points.  

Study hours

At least 7 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

This module is subject to the Penalties for late submission for Postgraduate Flexible programmes policy, which can be found at:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark; 
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Formative assessment is any task or activity which creates feedback (or feedforward) for you about your learning, but which does not contribute towards your overall module mark.
