Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module is intended for students who wish to study abroad at a university with which the University of Reading has an exchange agreement. 

The module aims to give students some experience of concepts and approaches in a different national tradition of scholarship. This may involve not only Mathematics and Statistics, but also other disciplines related to or relevant for Mathematics and Statistics. 

This module involves spending a year (nine to twelve months) at a university abroad which has an exchange agreement with the University of Reading, follow modules at the host university in Mathematics and Statistics and/or related subjects. Examination requirements are those of the host institution.  

The exchange requires the student to understand, and live in, a different country and adapt to its culture and norms. It also encourages the student to use their communication skills and language abilities to settle in the host country, identify study requirements of the host institution, and to develop self-reliance, initiative and problem-solving skills when coping with the demands of everyday life and university study in another country. The student will also be able to identify and critically assess the key differences between Mathematics and Statistics perspectives in Britain and those of the host country.

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the learning outcomes specified by the host institution for the modules studied abroad

Module content

The module is based on exchange programmes with universities in other countries. It consists of an approved number of credits from a host university amounting to the equivalent of 120 credits from the University of Reading.

Study hours

This module is a placement or study abroad module and therefore the teaching and learning activities will predominantly, or entirely, take place away from the University of Reading. Your host organisation will normally advise you of the associated hours of your placement or year abroad. If the module includes any in-person activities at the University of Reading, these will be confirmed to you before the start of the module.

Please note the independent study hours above are notional numbers of hours; each student will approach studying in different ways. We would advise you to reflect on your learning and the number of hours you are allocating to these tasks.

Semester 1 The hours in this column may include hours during the Christmas holiday period.

Semester 2 The hours in this column may include hours during the Easter holiday period.

Summer The hours in this column will take place during the summer holidays and may be at the start and/or end of the module.

Assessment

Requirements for a pass

The marks that students achieve at their host university will be brought back with them to the University of Reading. After translation in accordance with the agreed formula, the marks will be applied to this module and, if applicable, used in the calculation of progression and/or the overall classification.           

If the Year Abroad is not successfully completed, the student will transfer to the equivalent programme without a Study Abroad Year.
