Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module is one of a suite of four modules under the theme “Flexible Learning Path” intended to recognise the learning and professional application of outcomes from courses not carrying formal academic credits. Students will, under the guidance their personal tutor, select the module from the Flexible Learning Path which is most appropriate to their requirements. Students will only be able to take one module.

This document of learning allows students to take ownership of their personal, professional and academic development and to demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills to enhance their practice within the workplace.

Students will be able to pursue a flexible range of learning pathways, including short courses and professional development activities that provide skills and learning appropriate to their employment. Students will take ownership of their personal, professional and academic development and will use this module to demonstrate the use of acquired knowledge and skills which enhance their practice within the workplace.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Monitor their own learning and development, including the identification of learning needs and planning of their acquisition
  2. Demonstrate a reflective and self-critical approach to personal and professional development
  3. Critically evaluate the learning and skills gained from academic and professional study and its application to the workplace

The following transferable skills will be developed in this module:

  • Negotiation skills
  • Personal professional development

Module content

Students will be expected to evidence their personal learning through justification of need and benefit within the context of their workplace. The nature of the learning will be flexible but must be fully justified by the student in terms of relevance and benefit to their employment.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

Students will research and justify personal learning courses with the support and advice of their industrial mentor and personal tutor.

Learning will be acquired through various teaching and learning strategies used in the taught study modules, units and courses that the student has undertaken.

Formal contact will be provided through supervisory team meetings.  An initial contact session will introduce students to the expectations and purpose of the document.

Contact hours will vary according to the teaching and learning strategies used within the component study courses.

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

Assessments with numerical marks

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three working days;
  • the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
  • where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline), no penalty shall be imposed;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessments marked Pass/Fail

  • where the piece of work is submitted more than three working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension of the deadline): a grade of Fail will be awarded.

The University policy statement on penalties for late submission can be found at: https://www.reading.ac.uk/cqsd/-/media/project/functions/cqsd/documents/qap/penaltiesforlatesubmission.pdf
