Overview

Module aims and purpose

The module will introduce students to key academic skills and strategies that will support their undergraduate studies. Students will engage with a series of core competencies, including time management and independent learning, academic writing and referencing, and making effective use of feedback. The module will also explore a range of challenges frequently encountered by students along with coping strategies and advice on accessing the network of support available. There will also be opportunities for students to develop an understanding of how skills developed throughout their degree transfer to the workplace. 

Module learning outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Identify core skills required for independent learning and strategies for developing these skills
  2. Search for academic resources and apply academic writing conventions, particularly regarding referencing and bibliographies
  3. Understand marking criteria and how to use feedback effectively
  4. Identify the support networks available at the University and how to access these
  5. Reflect on their academic and personal skills, identify areas for development and strategies for achieving this

Module content

Independent learning and time management; student wellbeing and welfare; researching library and online resources; academic writing and referencing; understanding marking rubrics; making effective use of feedback; reflecting on academic and personal skills and how these can be transferred to the workplace.

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be delivered through introductory lectures and a series of seminars, where students will have the opportunity to apply and discuss the material covered. 

Study hours

At least 6 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.
