Overview

Module aims and purpose

The module aims to give students experience of concepts and approaches in a different national tradition of scholarship, and to help students to learn different cultures. This may involve not only Computer Science, but also other disciplines related to or relevant to the Computer Science subject.
 
This module involves spending a year (nine to twelve months) at a university abroad which has an exchange agreement with the University of Reading. Students follow modules at the host university in Computer Science and/or related subjects. The selected modules are equivalent to 120 credits of modules in the University of Reading. Examination requirements are those of the host university.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that the student will be able to successfully pass oral and/or written examinations according to the requirements of the host university.

Module content

The module is based on exchange programmes with universities in other countries. It consists of an approved number of credits from a host university amounting to the equivalent of 120 credits from the University of Reading. Support and advice about applying for places can be obtained from the Study Abroad office in the University of Reading.

Studying abroad is an exciting and stimulating way of preparing students with skills and experiences for living and working in a global world.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be delivered by the host university under a study agreement. Teaching and learning activities will comply with the agreement.

Study hours

This module is a placement or study abroad module and therefore the teaching and learning activities will predominantly, or entirely, take place away from the University of Reading. Your host organisation will normally advise you of the associated hours of your placement or year abroad. If the module includes any in-person activities at the University of Reading, these will be confirmed to you before the start of the module.

Please note the independent study hours above are notional numbers of hours; each student will approach studying in different ways. We would advise you to reflect on your learning and the number of hours you are allocating to these tasks.

Semester 1 The hours in this column may include hours during the Christmas holiday period.

Semester 2 The hours in this column may include hours during the Easter holiday period.

Summer The hours in this column will take place during the summer holidays and may be at the start and/or end of the module.

Assessment

Requirements for a pass

The marks that students achieve at their host university will be brought back with them to the University of Reading. After translation in accordance with the agreed formula, the marks will be applied to this module and, if applicable, used in the calculation of progression and/or the overall classification.     

If the Year Abroad is not successfully completed, the student will transfer to the equivalent programme without a Study Abroad Year.
