Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module is run by SPPE.

To provide students with an opportunity to undertake a problem-based research project enabling them to analyse critically and in depth a specific topic, chosen by students, within the realm of their studies on Strategy and International Relations; to display the ability to carry out primary and secondary research. 

The aims of the dissertation or work-based project are to: 

• Develop students’ capacity for independent research, engagement with core literature, self-reflection and critical analysis;  
• Deepen their knowledge of a specialised topic within their programme of study;  
• Develop their ability to produce an extended piece of analysis. 

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

• Formulate a relevant, coherent and clearly defined research project.
• Employ their knowledge of research methods appropriate to projects in Strategy and International Relations to analyse complex issues in a critical fashion.
• Identify sources of information, ideas, and appropriate data.
• Conduct a systematic and carefully structured analysis of the information collected. 

Module content

A supervised, though largely independent problem-based research project of 8,000 words (+/-10%) on a strategy and/or international relations-themed subject, preferably arising out of the student’s programme of study on the AHEP MSc programme or their professional role. In normal circumstances, the Extended Research project will be completed over a period of circa 18 months from first contact with an allocated supervisor to the delivery of the finished project.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods

This is an independent research project resulting in a dissertation or work-based project. Student support will vary based on the needs of the individual, but the following is indicative of what a student might expect from their assigned dissertation/work-based project supervisor

• Formative feedback on the student’s proposed research question. 
• Comments on a plan/skeleton and then one section up to the larger of 1,000 words or 10% of the final project length.  
• Summative feedback as first marker. 

Study hours

At least 0 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.

Please note the independent study hours above are notional numbers of hours; each student will approach studying in different ways. We would advise you to reflect on your learning and the number of hours you are allocating to these tasks.

Semester 1 The hours in this column may include hours during the Christmas holiday period.

Students need to achieve an overall module mark of 50% to pass this module.

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties to work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark; 
• where the piece of work is submitted more than one calendar month after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
