Overview
Module aims and purpose
ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE AHEP PROGRAMME.
This module is run by SPPE .
To provide students with an opportunity to undertake a problem-based research project enabling them to analyse critically and in depth a specific topic, chosen by students, within the realm of their studies on Strategy and International Relations; to display the ability to carry out primary and secondary research.
Aims:
• develop students’ capacity for independent research, engagement with core literature, self-reflection and critical analysis;
• deepen their knowledge of a specialised topic within their programme of study;
• develop their ability to produce an extended piece of analysis.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
1. Formulate a relevant, coherent and clearly defined research project;
2. Employ their knowledge of research methods appropriate to projects in Strategy and International Relations to analyse complex issues in a critical fashion;
3. Identify sources of information, ideas, and appropriate data.
4. Conduct a systematic and carefully structured analysis of the information collected;
Module content
A supervised, though largely independent problem-based research project of 10,000 words (+/-10%) on a strategy and/or international relations-themed subject, preferably arising out of the student’s programme of study on the AHEP BSc programme or their professional role. In normal circumstances, the Extended Research project will be completed over a period of circa 18 months from first contact with an allocated supervisor to the delivery of the finished project.
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
This is an independent research project. Student support will vary based on the needs of the individual, but the following is indicative of what a student might expect from the assigned dissertation/work-based project supervisor
• Formative feedback on the student’s proposed research question.
• Comments on a plan/skeleton and then one section up to the larger of 1,000 words or 10% of the final project length.
• Summative feedback as first marker
