Summary module description:

Neuropsychology of Frontostriatal Disorders 

Aims:
The aim of the course is to provide a well-rounded understanding of several key disorders which affect the frontostriatal system, to provide experience of critical evaluation of selected topics in those areas and of current research being undertaken in the department in this area.

Assessable learning outcomes:

Students will gain experience from participating in evaluative discussions of research and clinical implications in large and small groups. The module additionally provides an opportunity for students to improve their ability to present an argument in a written assignment

Additional outcomes:

Students will gain experience from participating in evaluative discussions of research and theory in large and small groups. The module additionally provides an opportunity for students to improve their critical thinking skills and the ability to interact and work in teams to explore and evaluate content. 

Outline content:

This module will provide a well-rounded understanding of several key disorders which affect the frontostriatal system. We will focus specifically on conditions such as  Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and Tourette’s syndrome. Areas such as neuropathology, clinical characteristics, behavioural sequelae, management issues, treatment approaches, emerging experimental options, rehabilitation and practical aspects of clinical patient work will be covered.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Seminars involve lectures, audio-visual material and interactive discussions. During the course of the module, students will engage in an interactive activity to get formative feedback.

Students have the opportunity to engage in an interactive activity to get formative feedback in preparation for the course assignment.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
