Summary module description:

This module is the first in a series of three. The module will support students in the development of the academic skills students need at university level, including a range of skills and techniques in the area of academic writing and reading, referencing as well as develop their competencies as professionals in the areas of time management, stress management and personal presentation.  

Aims:

The module aims to: 

• Develop students professional competencies in the area of time management, personal presentations and stress management 


• Develop student’s academic skills to maximise the learning process 

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, it is expected that programme members may be able to demonstrate their ability in the following areas: 

To know and understand: 

• Explain how time is managed using a broad range of techniques and tools  


• Practice and maintain your personal presence.  


• Prepare and present successfully to large groups. 


• Understand, appreciate and value different perspectives and the value of working collaboratively and effectively 

Skills 

• Demonstrate useful contributions to a team environment 


• Use widely recognized tools and techniques to ensure the management of time and pressure effectively, and prioritization and strategic alignment of activities

Outline content:

The module covers the following topics: 

• Academic Skills development 


• Time management 


• Professional development (presenting and delivering to groups) 


• Stress and Wellbeing 

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching and learning takes place through a blended learning approach. The teaching and learning methods comprise a combination of self-study via a range of online materials on the Canvas learning platform and two workshops led by the module convenor and apprenticeship tutor. 

Materials on Canvas include content on-screen, videos, PowerPoint presentations, journal articles, book chapters, practical activities and reflection points.  

Summative assessment- Examinations:

No examination 

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

One 1,500 word individual assignment, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort (70% of overall mark).  

One group presentation, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort (30% of overall mark).  

Formative assessment methods:

Facilitated learning activities are undertaken during the seminars and workshops, including formative feedback on these activities.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

40% 

Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment by 100% assignment, capped at 40%.
