Summary module description:
The module is a learning opportunity designed to expose research students to important pedagogical practices, develop awareness of other teaching efforts on Henley Business School, and provide a venue for faculty and external experts to share and learn about best instructional practices. This module provides insight into the practical application of pedagogy in business teaching, reflecting The UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) dimensions. The module will grant credit to research students completing the necessary requirements for the Teaching Qualification Certificate which will in addition include the completion of sections Preparing to teach: Introduction to teaching and Learning (run by CSQT). All students will receive Henley Business School Certificate of Attendance. The convenor of the module will act as a teaching mentor for all students enrolled to the module.
Aims:
• To contextualize language learning for the research students;
• To update research students’ notions of pedagogical achievements as well as challenges in business learning;
• To provide research students with pedagogical information and tutorial plans on selected business topics.
Assessable learning outcomes:
Gain understanding about how to be an effective teacher/educator and how to strengthen those abilities as a teacher and learner;
Critically asses their teaching methods and identify the best teaching techniques;
Demonstrate a knowledge of the pedagogical strategies of delivering tutorials.
Additional outcomes:
Through taking this module, students should gain a greater insight into a variety of pedagogical topics that have a social or ethical aspect for business teaching international students. They should be able to discuss in depth both practical and theoretical issues relating to the responsibility and responsiveness of business school teaching.
Outline content:
The module is organised thematically around the five main topics:
1. Introduction: What is pedagogy?
2. Ways of teaching
3. Learning pyramid
4. Instructional techniques of business teaching
5. Problems with tutorials
Global context:
The module deals with global issues of pedagogy, and utilises global case studies of teaching.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Interactive and experiential learning methods are involved in the teaching of this module. Essay and in class test enforce the learning occurring through the contact hours, and all builds toward students’ preparation for the final assessment: business game, where team work and individual contributions are assessed and feedback is provided. Multiple sources of feedback and assessment will enrich students’ learning and progression. Coursework based module.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
The module is 100 percent based on coursework.
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Oral assessment and presentation (80% weight) have two components, i.e. one PowerPoint or slide presentation and one oral summary reflective report on pedagogical activity over the Autumn term (which could include marking, meeting students, teaching, reviewing teaching, etc. The choice of an activity should be discussed with the convenor of the module.- Week 30
Peer review observation (20%) will be done by the convenor and a report in Form 3 of the University of Reading will be provided. Peer review observation will be done according to the teaching schedule of the research student during Autumn-Spring terms.
Formative assessment methods:
Mini presentations for the seminars, after which the feedback will be provided.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A weighted average mark of coursework of 50%.
Reassessment arrangements:
Resubmit coursework (one reflective presentation) in August/September.
