Summary module description:

This module is delivered at University of Reading Malaysia only.

This module will provide opportunities for the students to plan and execute a co-curricular activity which will benefit the local community or environment.

Aims:

• To nurture students’ leadership skills, communication skills, problem solving skills and confidence, through group collaboration.


• To develop awareness of social or environmental issues in the local community.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, the students will be able to:

• Plan and describe a co-curricular project as part of a group.


• Meet regularly with group members in order to implement project.


• Explain progress and outcome of project orally and/or in written reports or meeting minutes.


• Reflect on success of the project through presentation and/or video.

Additional outcomes:

• Effectively carry out problem-solving, leadership and teamwork.


• Confidence in IT skills.


• Appreciation of the need for helping social or environmental issues through community help.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

An initial session will contextualise the intention to allow students to decide what project to carry out and how to implement it. For the next few weeks, tutorial groups will work with lecturers to develop their plan. For a number of weeks the student groups carry out the project (usually off campus). For the final session a plenary group will come together to listen to presentations and discuss successes.

The project is in the form of:

• A community service project proposal (week 4)


• Evidence of engagement of the whole group in implementing the project, mainly through meeting minutes (collected between weeks 4 and 10)


• A presentation on project implementation which includes a video (week 11)

Formative assessment methods:

Individual feedback will be given on written assignments, including plans and drafts, and formal spoken presentations.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum mark of 40%. Percentage scores will be recorded for transcript purposes.

Reassessment arrangements:

None. This module is outside the scope of regular undergraduate assessment arrangements.

If a student fails an MPU module, they will be required to repeat it.
