Summary module description:

This module is delivered at University of Reading Malaysia only.

Intermediate Malay Language designed for Malaysian students in Malaysia who do not have or scored below ‘credit’ (school grade C) for the Malay Language subject in Malaysian Certificate in Education (SPM) examination.

Focus is on intermediate speaking and writing skills.

Aims:

• To enable students the ability to communicate through writing and speaking Malay Language effectively and appropriately in real life situations.


• To develop and integrate the use of four language skills i.e. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.


• To develop interest and appreciation of the Malay Language.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, the students will be able to:

• Write in Malay Language using appropriate vocabulary and grammar for functional intermediate level.


• Ability to communicate confidently in an informal conversation in Malay Language, and manage formal conversations.


• Understand spoken Malay Language in a variety of real life situations and contexts.


• Develop a vocabulary which can support understanding of the Malay language at the expected national school credit level.

Additional outcomes:

The module also aims to encourage the development of the students’ effectiveness in group situations, including producing video in a group. Students are also encouraged to develop their IT skills by use of computer resources.

Outline content:

Series of lectures covering the following main topics:

• Introduction: History of Malay Language


• Pronunciation and Intonation


• Spelling and Grammar


• Listening Skills


• Writing Skills

Global context:

The module will only be delivered to Malaysians based at UoRM; there is an alternative Malay Language module for international students at a lower proficiency level (IL1MC2).

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures and tutorials with two contact hours per week (or four of being delivered intensively). The module might be delivered within Term 1, Term 2 or in the summer vacation (in an intensive form). Students are a mix of Parts 1-3, since they can complete the module at any time during their time as an undergraduate student.

The project is in the form of a video summarising one aspect of the content learnt, plus general engagement and attendance (as required by the Malaysian educational authorities).

The presentation is done in groups.

The in-class test is 2 hours in the last week of term.

Formative assessment methods:

Individual feedback will be given on written assignments, including plans and drafts, and formal spoken presentations.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum mark of 40%. Percentage scores will be recorded for transcript purposes.

Reassessment arrangements:

None. This module is outside the scope of regular undergraduate assessment arrangements.

If a student fails an MPU module, they will be required to repeat it.
