Summary module description:

This module is delivered at University of Reading Malaysia only.

Beginner’s Malay Language designed for international students in Malaysia.

Focus is on conversational and functional speaking, and on grammar.

Aims:

• To give students the ability to speak and understand Malay Language at level A1 (CEFR).


• To give students an appreciation of formal and informal Spoken Malay Language.


• To help students understand grammar in Malay Language at level A1 (CEFR).

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, the students will be able to:

• Identify the sound system and the systems of Romanised spelling, vocabulary and grammar of Malay Language in simple sentences.


• Understand spoken Malay Language in a variety of simple everyday situations.


• Ability to communicate in a formal or informal conversation in Malay Language at a basic level.


• Write simple sentences (CEFR level A1) in Malay.

Additional outcomes:

The module also aims to encourage the development of the students’ effectiveness in group situations, including producing video in a group. Students are also encouraged to develop their IT skills by use of computer resources.

Outline content:

Series of lectures covering the following main topics:

• Introduction: Pronunciation, Writing Skills and Reading Skills


• Conversation: Getting to know Someone  


• Conversation: In the lecture hall


• Conversation: In a restaurant


• Conversation: In a library


• Grammar


• Conversation: At a hostel


• Conversation: At a bus station

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module is designed to help welcome international students to Malaysia, including mobility students is this additional non-credit module can be included in their timetable. It aims to make communication between people of different background more enjoyable and less stressful.

The project is in the form of a video summarising one aspect of the content learnt, plus general engagement and attendance (as required by the Malaysian educational authorities).

The in-class test is 1.5 hours in the last week of term.

Formative assessment methods:

A series of BlackBoard homework tasks, due weekly.

Individual feedback will be given on written assignments, including plans and drafts, and formal spoken presentations.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum mark of 40%. Percentage scores will be recorded for transcript purposes.

Reassessment arrangements:

None. This module is outside the scope of regular undergraduate assessment arrangements. If a student fails an MPU module, they will be required to repeat it.
