Summary module description:

This module is delivered at University of Reading Malaysia only.

This module provides an overview of Malaysia’s physical environment and natural resources. Students will be given an understanding of the issues and challenges with the sustainability and management of natural resources in Malaysia.

Aims:

• To learn facts about the natural environment and natural resources in Malaysia.


• To introduce the challenges posed by exploiting natural resources within a developing nation.


• To learn about efforts to reach sustainability in managing natural resources in Malaysia.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, the students will be able to:

• Describe key features of Malaysia’s physical environment.


• Describe the extent to which natural resources can be found within Malaysia.                    


• Discuss the challenges of managing environmental and natural resources in the context of Malaysia’s development.

Additional outcomes:

The module aims to encourage students to be able to effectively carry out problem-solving, leadership and teamwork. The module also aims to encourage the development of confidence in oral communication skills and IT skills.

Outline content:

Series of lectures covering the following main topics:

• Introduction to the geographical distribution of natural resources in Malaysia


• Tropical rainforest


• Water resources: rivers and lakes


• Petroleum and natural gas


• Mineral resources


• Agriculture


• Biodiversity and sustainability


• Renewable resources


• Resource management

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures and tutorials with two contact hours per week (or four when being delivered intensively), with project work to complete between sessions.

The project is in the form of a video summarising one aspect of the content learnt, plus general engagement and attendance (as required by the Malaysian educational authorities).

 

The in-class test is 1.5 hours in the last week of term.

Formative assessment methods:

A series of BlackBoard homework tasks, due weekly.

 

Individual feedback will be given on written assignments, including plans and drafts, and formal spoken presentations.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum mark of 40%. Percentage scores will be recorded for transcript purposes.

Reassessment arrangements:

None. This module is outside the scope of regular undergraduate assessment arrangements.

If a student fails an MPU module, they will be required to repeat it.
