Summary module description:

This module focuses on the discipline-specific language and communication skills to more effectively manage coursework assignments on MPharm Pharmacy programmes. It is primarily designed for MPharm students whose first language is not English. The module focuses on key Pharmacy written and spoken assignment genres such as reflective logs and consultation practice.



The module is non-credit-bearing and designed to support students’ disciplinary study, the expectation being that students will apply the skills they have learnt on IL1APHM in their credit-bearing work. Therefore, for the module itself there is no assessment or expectation of independent study hours.


Aims:

This module aims to support MPharm Pharmacy students whose first language is not English to study more effectively in the UK academic culture and context. It focuses on the key academic language and skills needed to successfully complete written and spoken coursework assignments on their degree programme and to engage effectively in lectures, spoken interactions and tasks.



By the end of the module, students will be better able to:




  • understand the expectations of key written assignment genre(s) in Pharmacy

  • employ task-appropriate organisational patterns at paragraph, section and whole-text level

  • employ task-appropriate language (grammar and lexis) reflecting the target audience

  • utilise appropriate oracy skills and language to accomplish spoken language professional tasks

  • communicate fluently and accurately within their discipline by building their subject-specific vocabulary and grammar

Outline content:

Classes will focus on the following:




  • Building discipline-specific vocabulary knowledge and an awareness of register for Pharmacy

  • Grammar for academic/professional communication, including verb tense and form, clause and sentence structure and question forms

  • Employing task-appropriate organisational patterns at paragraph, section and whole-text level

  • Speaking and oracy skills and strategies for dealing with a range of  Pharmacy communicative purposes, e.g.

    • organising and signposting spoken language communication/texts

    • pronunciation, including sentence stress and intonation





interactional skills, e.g. turn-taking, asking for clarification 


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

It takes a discipline-specific approach to language and literacy development using example written and spoken student texts and published Pharmacy-specific sources in classroom tasks.



Teaching will be learner-centred, taking a task-based approach to:




  • analysis of example texts from the target genres

  • guided ‘noticing’ of key linguistic features in context

  • scaffolded practice exercises

  • exercises practicing use of relevant lexical/grammatical items

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
