Summary module description:
Learn the theoretical and empirical considerations associated with macroeconomic policy making in developing countries. You will engage with pathbreaking macroeconomic analysis of how countries grow and develop, why some countries are richer than others and whether growth is associated with poverty and inequality.
Aims:
To impart an understanding of macroeconomic issues in developing countries, and the ability to use the theoretical tools provided to critically assess different areas of policy making.
Assessable learning outcomes:
A good understanding of macroeconomic issues in developing countries, particularly the theoretical tools to critically assess different areas of macroeconomic policy. Also, students will acquire knowledge of examples from specific developing countries which allow them to exercise their analytical skills.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The topics of the syllabus are presented and discussed in 5 lectures of 2 hours each, complemented with 5 tutorials in which students explore the material in more depth.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A weighted average coursework mark of 50%.
Reassessment arrangements:
By the submission of a written essay on a new topic by the last Friday in August of the same academic year.
