Summary module description:
This module aims to provide the occasion for students to identify, research, and organize an extended written project. The focus of the module is on independent learning. The module also challenges students to reflect and build upon knowledge gained from lectures, seminars and studio tutorials in parts 2 and 3 of the programme.

This module aims to provide the occasion for students to identify, research, and organize an extended written project.

Assessable learning outcomes:
- demonstrate the ability to identify a topic appropriate to the length of a dissertation and capable of generating fruitful enquiry
- sustain an argument over a lengthy piece of writing that marshals evidence and information derived from a variety of sources
- gather and collate information and images from a broad range of sources including primary and secondary text, art journals and periodicals, exhibitions and events and internet based materials
- evaluate sources and information critically
- demonstrate appropriate use of scholarly apparatus for referencing sources and ideas
- demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical and critical thinking to art works

Additional outcomes:
- plan, manage and organise research effectively
- demonstrate an ability to work independently
- use a variety of IT skills and on-line information sources

Outline content:

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will be independently pursued with the support of tutorials that provide students through developing the confidence and ability to choose a topic, develop a bibliography and write and complete a dissertation.

Students prepare a dissertation of 8-12,000 words (including references, excluding bibliography and other apparatus) to be submitted at the end of week 9 in the spring term.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
