Summary module description:

This module is designed to complement students’ experience of teaching in school. It forms an introduction to study at master's level and to using research in order to deepen reflective practice.


Aims:
For students to inform reflection on their own practice through observation of others and by critical engagement with research literature.

Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students are expected:




  • To be able to offer critical evaluation of alternative approaches to teaching

  • To be able to respond critically to issues and methodology in research literature and official reports.

  • To be able to present an argument that is supported by appropriate and correctly-referenced evidence.


Additional outcomes:


  • Understanding developed through this module will contribute towards the development of the student’s practical teaching.

  • The modules will prepare students for future, more independent work at master's level.


Outline content:

Students will be asked to focus on an aspect of their general development as a teacher, and will be given a choice of titles. They will be asked to consider a limited number of research articles and official reports in order to identify the issues raised and the methodological approaches taken. Students will be guided in writing a review of this literature. Students will be working in school while undertaking this study and will be required to undertake classroom observations focusing on their chosen topic. They will be guided in how to gather and present this evidence. Students will learn how to use their reading to inform their reflections on their own practice and their observations of other teachers.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures and seminars in the autumn term will provide an induction for students to working at master's level. These will include lectures and seminars on critical approaches to the literature, referencing and writing skills, as well as on the content of the assignment. 



A tutorial will be provided to give feedback on the review of literature.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 50% or higher

Re-submission within one calendar month of notification of failure.
