Summary module description:
The portfolio meets the requirement to log the learning outcomes of the National SENCo award as laid out in the National Award for SENCo-ordination published by the National College for Taeching and Leadership. The possible components of the portfolio are those prescribed by Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years
Aims:
To enable candidates for the PGCERT SENCo to complete the requirements for attaining the qualification of Special Educational Needs Coordinator by evidencing the full range of work expected of a qualified SENCo.
Assessable learning outcomes:
Part A The professional knowledge and understanding that SENCOs need of the legislative context for SEN and theoretical concepts that underpin effective leadership and practice.
Part B The expertise and capabilities that SENCOs need to lead and coordinate provision effectively.
Part C The personal and professional qualities that SENCOs need to make a positive impact on the ethos and culture in schools and other settings.

There is no specific taught content associated with this module, as the requirements are within the National Award.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The portfolio of evidence is based on work undertaken by the student while at their work, and while completing their PG Cert SENCo course, so includes examples which come from their own practice. The course tutor will offer times to discuss the portfolio and its progress during the spring or summer terms.

Penalties for late submission:
The portfolio should be submitted by the end of the academic year during which the student completed the last of three SENCo credit bearing modules (EDM122, EDM123, EDM124). If the student submits after this date they will be deemed to have failed the module.
If the portfolio is submitted more than three years after the candidate has entered in to the role of Special Education Needs Coordinator, the candidate would not have fulfilled the legal requirements for holding the title of SENCo.

Through the completion of the portfolio folder where the student has demonstrated they have engaged with and evidenced the criteria as stated in this guidance:
Reassessment arrangements:
Resubmission of portfolio within one term of failure being communicated to the student.
