Summary module description:

This module will establish students’ understanding of the nature and purpose of Art teaching and learning in the primary school. It will include a strong focus upon the notion of what the study of Art in schools means and will look at historical and philosophical perspectives, exploring tensions around the teaching of Art in terms of pedagogy and practice. Students will begin to inform their development as subject leaders in primary art. Through an examination of a range of Art Education initiatives, they will begin to identify and understand the important role that art can contribute to the primary curriculum and the education and development of children. Within this context, links to the National Curriculum for Art and Design will be identified and critically analysed. 


Aims:


  • To develop and strengthen the students’ understanding of the important role of art in the primary curriculum

  • To lead students to a critical understanding of the educational value of art in the primary school

  • To develop the students’ role as subject leaders in primary art

  • To provide opportunities for independent and collaborative research

  • To develop oral communication through group presentations and discussions

  • To develop and strengthen the students’ knowledge and understanding of significant aspects in Art Education

  • To begin to know and understand the content and scope of the EYFS and National Curriculum for Art and Design

  • To understand and make links between students’ own art practice, the national and legislative requirements and application in the classroom

  • To identify their developing role as artist teacher


Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module trainees will be able to:




  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the educational value of art in the primary school

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Art Education practices that enhance children’s creative and artistic development

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Art Education practices that have the potential to enhance children’s learning across the curriculum

  • Be able to demonstrate an awareness of effective pedagogy in Art Education

  • Identify the educational potential of art across the curriculum

  • Demonstrate the ability to study independently and collaboratively in order to assimilate and communicate sound knowledge and understanding and draw upon that knowledge to inform their role as subject leaders in primary art

  • Reflect critically upon aspects of Art Education and Art Education practices and their ability to enhance children’s creative and artistic development 

  • Undertake focused research and achieve greater critical awareness through the use of literature, e learning and observation of good art practice in primary schools, gallery/museum settings and artist-in-residencies at the university and further afield.


Outline content:

This module will enable students to develop and strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the important role art contributes to children’s development and education in the primary school. It will begin to establish the students’ future role as subject leader in primary art and the place of the EYFS and National Curriculum for Art and Design in this context.



It will explore and critically analyse a range of aspects within Art Education such as Artistin Residence schemes; Museum and Gallery Education; Critical and Contextual Studies; Cultural Diversity and Global Citizenship; Art and Special Needs; the Development of Children’s drawing; Assessment in Art; the role of the primary Art subject leader and the role of the artist teacher. 



Current initiatives in Primary Art Education will also be examined as appropriate. 


Global context:

An international dimension will be considered as appropriate. 


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

This module will be delivered using a range of blended learning techniques and will incorporate lead lectures and student-led presentations and seminars.

2,500 word essay


Formative assessment methods:

Guided research tasks and group discussions will inform critical thinking in key areas of Art Education pedagogy. 


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

40%.

Reassessed by an assignment during the summer resit period by a date specified by Exam Board.

1) Required text books:  Additional costs will vary according to the choice of texts used. Students should expect to spend in the region of £10.00 in order to complete this module.

3) Specialist clothing, footwear or headgear:  None

4) Printing and binding:  Occasional printing of materials, although photocopies of materials will be provided in the teaching sessions. Students will need to provide a printed copy of their assessment. Library printing costs are 5p for B/W page and 15p for colour page
