This module aims to introduce students to appropriate research tools and skills.

This module aims to introduce students to appropriate research tools and skills.

Assessable learning outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate:




  • Appropriate level of competency in using IT research tools

  • Appropriate level of competency in using bibliographic research tools

  • Appropriate level of competency in academic writing

  • Appropriate level of competency in designing a research project and writing a research proposal


Additional outcomes:
Because this module takes the form of a series of intensive workshops, students will also have the opportunity to improve their skills at group work and at teambuilding.

Outline content:

This module provides an introduction to research tools and skills which will be further developed in the core and option modules of the degree and in the dissertation. By the end of the module, students will have developed an outline proposal for their MA dissertation, which will enable them to be paired with a dissertation supervisor.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

This module is assessed by means of a short written assignment.  For full-time students, this is  due in by 12pm on Friday of Week 1 of Spring Term.  For part-time students, this is due in by Monday of Week 5 of Spring Term.


Formative assessment methods:

Students will be given the opportunity to receive feedback by participating in written and  oral formative exercises during the Autumn Term.


Penalties for late submission:

The below information applies to students on taught programmes except those on Postgraduate Flexible programmes. The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
