Summary module description:
This module underpins a student's year in industry. Students' understanding of the shape and composition of the construction industry will be developed. Particular focus will be given to career management skills and to the introduction of the skills frameworks underpinning construction professional development and becoming chartered.

Aims:

• To give students experience of working in the construction industry and cultivate a reflective approach to practice.


• To develop a range of career management and transferable skills.


• To engage the students in professional development and their route to professional chartership.


• To enable the student to place their placement experience in the context of the wider construction industry and professional practice.

Assessable learning outcomes:

Students will be able to:

• Clearly describe their experience and recognise its value to their career development.


• Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of their chosen professional body and use these to inform critical reflection on their practice in industry.


• Articulate a strategy for their career development locating within this both their placement experience and remaining academic study.

Additional outcomes:

• Students will develop an understanding of the workings of the construction industry.


• Students will become competent in key professional skills such as team working, problem solving, and oral and written communication.


• Students will extend their technical skills.


• Students will be able to prepare written reports, give oral presentations and be able to discuss their work in a scholarly manner.

Outline content:

Year-long (40 weeks) placement in the construction industry or surveying sector with a minimum of 30 weeks or 6 months continuous work experience in exceptional circumstances.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
One-year placement at an industrial host; meetings with academic and industrial supervisor.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis.
It is not possible to retake this module as it involves a year in industry which cannot be repeated. Students who fail the year in industry will be transferred to the three year variant of the programme.

Formative assessment methods:

All students will have three meetings with their academic supervisor or placement officer during their placement, at least one of which will involve a site visit (or equivalent). During these visits the student will present their work and be able to discuss this with their academic supervisor.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Students will satisfactorily complete their working placement to the standards set by the construction industry
This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis.

Reassessment arrangements:
It is not possible to retake this module as it involves an industrial placement that cannot be repeated.
