Summary module description:

The module provides the student with the opportunity to carry out original research into some aspects of entomology focussing on pre-existing large entomological datasets, collections or data derived from winter fieldwork. The module will utilise learning from BIMWA12 to inform statistical analysis.

The module provides the student with the opportunity to carry out original research into some aspects of entomology focussing on pre-existing large entomological datasets, collections or data derived from winter fieldwork. The module will utilise learning from BIMWA12 to inform statistical analysis.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

• Design experiments to collect data relevant to entomology under field conditions                                                       

OR

• Source and assess suitable entomology datasets for desk-based research.


• Present and analyse data


• Critically appraise the value of the data in relation to known and possible constraints


• Present the results of the study in the form of a project report containing an introduction to the problem, precise description of the methods followed, accurate and appropriate analysis and presentation of the data, and a final discussion where the results are considered in the light of other published studies.

Additional outcomes:

In many cases the module will provide the student an opportunity to work with organisations such as the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust or British Entomological and Natural History society.

Outline content:

The precise content of the module will vary depending on the nature of the project embarked on. In all cases, however, the student will be expected to collect or research data on some aspect of entomology and to make a novel contribution to the subject.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The students will learn of the problems associated with carrying out original research first-hand. Students will be expected to consider potential problems beforehand and to discuss design and analysis with academics both within the university and the organization with which they may be working. Students will have one-to-one advice available to throughout. The data presentation and analytical procedures learned should be demonstrated in the write-up.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
