Summary module description:
Health Psychology

Aims:
This module aims to:
- enable students to study selected Health Psychology topics in depth;
- provide knowledge of current research and experience in critical evaluation;
- develop students ability to study independently.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the student will be able to

1. Critically analyse key concepts used to understand health behaviours.


2. Critically evaluate evidence that investigates these key concepts.


3. Synthesise different approaches to explaining specific health behaviours.

Additional outcomes:

Students will gain experience of working in small groups.  The module will offer the opportunity for students to develop their academic skills including critical and analytical thinking, synthesis, and application of theory.  It will also offer students the opportunity to develop broader skills, including presentation skills, reading proficiency and time management. 

Outline content:

The module comprises 7 2-hour seminars. Using short lectures, discussion and small group work, this module will explore key topics within Health Psychology. The module is topic based, with relevant theories/concepts being described, applied and critically evaluated.

Coursework will comprise a pre-recorded or live oral presentation using PowerPoint (100%). 

Formative assessment methods:

In small groups, using a structured form, students will give each other peer feedback on the draft presentation of a pre-recorded single PowerPoint slide.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

A mark of 40% overall

Reassessment is by re-examination of the oral presentation in August/September.
