Summary module description:
This module aims to provide an overview of the role of management and leadership in healthcare practice. Students will undertake 50% of the module as experiential learning to embed knowledge, skills and behaviours in undertaking projects in the workplace. Students will be supported to reflect on their experiences by developing a professional portfolio of experiential learning which will be used throughout the MSc programme. This module will be studied at the University of Reading and within local clinical pharmacy healthcare providers.
Aims:
This module aims to provide an overview of the role of management and leadership in healthcare practice. Students will undertake 50% of the module as experiential learning to embed knowledge, skills and behaviours in undertaking projects in the workplace.
Assessable learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- Discuss the difference between management and leadership, referencing relevant competency frameworks
- Discuss approaches to attending, chairing and minuting meetings for effective dissemination of information
- Describe approaches to managing conflict
- Describe the role that organisational culture has in reference to management and leadership styles
- Explain the role of key performance indicators in medicines optimisation with reference to the international context
- Discuss approaches to self-management and self-development for healthcare professionals
Skills
- Reflect critically on your own strengths and weaknesses in management and leadership, identifying models which best suit your preferred styles
- Critically appraise the management and leadership of productive team working
- Reflect on the key characteristics of managers and leaders who drive effective working, individually and for teams
- Demonstrate an appreciation of working across boundaries, internally and externally, and how this affects service delivery and person-centred care
- Demonstrate safe and effective communication skills with patients and other healthcare professionals

Outline content:
This module will focus on management and leadership in healthcare and how healthcare professionals can improve their own practice by understanding the wider organisational processes within which they work.
Global context:
This module will highlight the differences in international healthcare practice, supporting students to consider the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s Global Competency Framework in their local context.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will use a range of teaching and learning methods including face to face lectures, workshops and tutorials. In addition, there will be simulated learning to support communication skills development. The remaining 50% of the time will be experiential learning, embedded in local healthcare providers, observing healthcare practice, researching pharmaceutical care plans and then reflecting on these patient cases with tutors, peers and/or other clinicians.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
- The written report must be passed at 50% with all essential criteria met
- The experiential learning portfolio must be passed at 50% and contain all mandatory content
Reassessment arrangements:
Reassessment will be arranged promptly to not delay the next module’s experiential learning component. Individualised timings may be required depending on the specific requirements for reassessment.
