Summary module description:

This core module is offered in Stage 2 of the MA Leadership, a part-time programme for experienced leaders or managers, with significant leadership responsibility. This module is specifically aimed at developing leadership skills in programme members regarding practices for individuals, teams and organisations for leadership with purpose and responsibility for self and society. It is delivered by a combination of face-to-face workshops, small group work, transfer to individual programme member context, personal reflection and self-study, over a period of several months, alongside other modules within Stage 2.


Aims:

This module aims to:




  • Develop the understanding and capability of individuals to pursue purposeful, meaningful, and responsible leadership of self, teams, organisations, and society

  • Develop an understanding of the link between purpose, meaning, and responsibility of managers and performance

  • Help programme members understand challenges of leadership and self-leadership with courage, resilience, integrity and reputation

  • Encourage programme members to discover and apply leadership strategies, tools, practices for purposeful and responsible leading

  • Understand and apply leadership principles and instruments regarding personal integrity, organisational reputation, and ethical considerations


Assessable learning outcomes:


  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of theoretical models and approaches of purposeful and responsible leadership of self, teams, organisations, and society

  • Application of concept based practices of purposeful and responsible leadership

  • A range of theoretical models, approaches and practices regarding leaders’ courage and resilience

  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of models and techniques to inspire and influence people upwards and downwards in an organisation

  • Analytical skills of interpreting challenges regarding personal and organisations values and personal integrity and organisational reputation



The programme member will receive feedback from peers and tutors on these outcomes during the module. This will contribute to their reflective statement in the final assignment for assessment.

  • Personal reflection on courageous moments in programme members’ leadership experience

Outline content:

The module covers the following topics:




  • Leadership purpose and responsibility at different levels of the organization

  • Leader’s identity, courage and resilience

  • Leadership and personal and organisations values

  • Leadership, personal integrity, organisational reputation, and ethical leadership

  • Instilling positive deviance - leadership to making a positive difference

  • Decision-making in a multi-stakeholder context

  • The role of business in society and corporate responsibility as process

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

There will be a 2 day workshop and one half day workshop separated by several weeks to allow for reflection and practice. The workshops are accompanied by online learning. Teaching methods include working in a whole group of up to 50 with one or two tutors, and in smaller groups of up to 8 programme members. Other learning activities take place in pairs and individual reflection. 



Teaching includes input from tutors, demonstrations of techniques and practice in small groups. Plenary discussion and table discussions are encouraged. Formative and summative feedback is given as appropriate.



Programme members are expected to draw on their practical leadership experience in their own or other organisations to practice and consolidate their learning. After the initial workshop in this module, the programme members prepare summary presentations and then write their assignments. They have access to the Virtual Learning Environment throughout the programme, until the end of their registration period.



Programme members are encouraged to keep a personal learning log, paper or electronic, during both this module and the complete programme.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Following on from the workshop during the subsequent ‘practice’ period of several weeks, programme members develop a personal purpose-instilled leadership development plan with their desired developmental goals and targets. Programme members will design a range of purpose-instilled leadership and learning activities which provide the opportunity to demonstrate acquired skill and develop further. These will be discussed in the final assessment, which will comprise:




  • A group presentation*, 15 minutes, and

  • A written assignment of 3000 words, based on the experience of the purpose-instilled leadership practice and personal leadership development during the overall period of the module. This should reflect on the activities which took place both in ‘live’ practice and at the workshops, the learning gained from it, the programme member’s learning reflections, and be underpinned with reference and critical analysis of the relevant literature.



*Assessment submission is according to the assessment schedule for the student’s cohort. If a student has formally agreed exceptional circumstances that delay their schedule, then an individual presentation will be considered.


Formative assessment methods:

A range of formative assessment methods are engaged in this course to enhance the student experience. These include group discussions, questions and feedback. These methods do not preclude direct student feedback as received in the classroom or solicited on the module.


Penalties for late submission:

As university post-experience postgraduate programmes. 


Assessment requirements for a pass:

Minimum of 50% for the module


Reassessment arrangements:

Resubmission based on same assignment brief  



One re-submission allowed, capped at 50%
