Summary module description:
A non-credit module that provides participating students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and learning gained in their first one or two years in a business context through a mini placement, enhancing understanding and skills of working in a business environment, and reflecting on this experience to enhance awareness of the graduate employment market. For a mini placement to be accepted as having module status, it should be for a work experience period of a minimum of six weeks, taking into account that Summer internships can often be found at short notice, students have until the start of Autumn term to complete their minimum six-week mini-placement, and thus need to register for this module a minimum of two weeks prior to starting, by contacting their relevant School Office. Students will not be able to register for this module retrospectively. Tier 4 (international and sponsored) students may take this module but may only start full-time work after the end of the summer term, and the placement must end before the start of the autumn term in the next academic year.
Aims:
The module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to extend knowledge and learning in their chosen specialisation, apply the knowledge gained in the first one or two years in a business context, enhance understanding and skills of working in a business environment, and reflect upon issues of relevant professional ethics. By completing the assessment the student will enhance their ability of being a reflective learner, skilled at evaluating their own professional development needs.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
- Evaluate their placement role within the organisation, and provide an academic appreciation of the placement.
- Critically evaluate the observed work in relation to relevant professional codes of practice.
- Understand how the student’s skills fit into the organisation, and identify the criteria necessary for the student to enhance his/her value to the organisation in the context of graduate employment.
Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to enhance potential employability on graduation in the job market through recognition of practical experience gained in full-time employment in the workplace, as well as from encouraging development of greater understanding of workplace requirements, understanding of the organisation’s criteria in the context of graduate recruitment processes and procedures, working with others, and the relationship between students’ academic studies and their application in practice in the market. Confidence, sense of responsibility, team working and communication skills will be enhanced.

Within one month of the start of the Autumn term, the student will need to provide a short report (between 1,000 and 2,000 words) summarising reflections on learning outcomes from the work experience, both related to the work carried out and related to the student’s own planned career path. The Module Convenor will need to accept the report and the student may resubmit the report within an extension period of a further month if the Module Convenor considers further reflection and work is needed.
