Summary module description:

This module will enable students to further develop their role as Subject Leader in primary Art alongside that of artist teacher. It will further their understanding of the importance of contemporary art in the primary curriculum and the teaching of the primary curriculum through art. Drawing upon and responding to their contemporary art and artist research and sketchbook work, students will present an online portfolio project that will inform their teaching of art in the primary school. 


Aims:


  • To consolidate their knowledge of contemporary art and Art Education

  • To develop further knowledge and skills in personal art practice that will inform their role as Subject Leader in Art

  • To draw upon their knowledge of contemporary art and Art Education to inform the design of a practical project that will inform their teaching of art within and across the early years and primary curriculum 


Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will:




  • Be able to organise and present a practical project around the theme of contemporary art, that will inform their primary art teaching 

  • Be able to identify and critically reflect upon an informed and personal position within the broad context of international contemporary art practices 

  • Be able to understand and communicate the importance of contemporary art and its relevance to classroom practice

  • Be able to identify the importance of their personal art practice and its relevance to classroom practice and their role as artist teacher 


Additional outcomes:

This module also aims to develop the students’ oral communication skills and critical evaluation within the context of personal and primary art making. Students will also identify the importance of their and contemporary art practice and its relevance to their future role as subject leader in art. 


Outline content:

Drawing upon previous research into the practice of modern and contemporary artists, this module will enable students to work independently on the development of an online portfolio, which will inform their teaching of primary art. It will also continue to enable students to identify and understand the importance of their art practice and its relation to classroom practice and their role as artist teacher. 



A high level of personal commitment to their development as artist teachers and subject leaders in art is expected. 


Global context:

The role of international artists will be considered. 


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Individual and group tutorials; structured group discussions; independent research visits to relevant gallery and museum exhibitions and other art organisations as required.



The Spring school experience placement will provide an opportunity to develop the independent practical work associated with this module.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Reassessment will be via an assignment submitted by a date decided by the Examinations Board.
