Summary module description:
This module deals with the principles of pedagogy and subject knowledge across the core and foundation subjects in the National Curriculum and the areas of learning of EYFS. The module supports the trainee in demonstrating the knowledge, attributes, skills and understanding to become a qualified teacher with a specific focus on subject knowledge.
Aims:
To support trainees to develop the pedagogy and subject knowledge to teach NC subjects and EY areas to enable them to develop robust evidence to address the Teachers’ Standards at the level expected of a trainee at the end of their training and necessary for the recommendation for the award of QTS.
Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion trainees will be able to:
- To develop the pedagogical, curricular and subject knowledge of the Teachers’ Standards at the level expected of a trainee at the end of their training programme and necessary for the award of QTS
- To demonstrate commitment to developing their subject knowledge through submission of all specified formative and summative tasks.
Additional outcomes:
To demonstrate proficiency in the fundamental skills in literacy and numeracy.
Outline content:
University based taught sessions and supported School Experiences will develop subject knowledge and knowledge and understanding of subject specific pedagogy, in order to provide evidence towards achievement of the Teachers' Standards at the level expected of a trainee at the end of their training programme and necessary for the award of QTS.
Global context:
Trainees would be expected to put into practice all they have learnt with regard to global awareness into their school experiences.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
University sessions will focus on developing knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning, as well as subject knowledge. In school, the trainee will work alongside an experienced teacher and will implement the ideas and principles met during the taught sessions. They will learn through practical experience, discussion, reflection, and teacher feedback.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Trainees will submit four tasks for summative assessment (English, maths, science, foundation subjects) and must also submit the range of formative tasks outlined below.
Formative assessment methods:
Trainees will complete and submit a range of tasks designed to support their achievement and understanding of the Teacher Standards at the level expected of a trainee at the end of their training programme, specifically regarding pedagogy and subject knowledge. The tasks will demonstrate their subject knowledge across English, maths, science and the foundation subjects.
The tasks will be formatively assessed against the task guidance, showing knowledge and understanding of the NC subjects and EY areas. This will be assessed through verbal feedback, peer assessment or written feedback.
Penalties for late submission:
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
Trainees must meet the assessable learning outcomes and pass all subject specific assessments
Reassessment arrangements:
If a summative task is failed, trainees will be given feedback on their task and be allowed one resubmission.
