Summary module description:

This module aims to enable students to study during the spring term in a University in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe or Japan.

Aims:

The aims of the study abroad semester are to develop a knowledge of a range of subject areas relating to the study of Economics and to provide students with an understanding of how these subject areas are perceived and taught overseas. Students will develop an awareness of the different methodologies and will develop research and writing skills appropriate to their new learning environment.

Assessable learning outcomes:

These will be in accordance with the host institution.

Additional outcomes:

The module aims to encourage the development of communication and personal development skills and the fostering of a systematic approach to self-awareness. The overall experience will enhance future career development and employability

Outline content:

Students will follow courses relating to subject areas they have already taken - in order to extend and develop their knowledge - and/or to subject areas where they have restricted knowledge but which they wish to study for personal, academic or career reasons.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Equivalent to 200 hours in accordance with the standard arrangements in the host university.

Coursework: In accordance with the standard arrangements in the host university.

Examinations: In accordance with the standard arrangements in the host university.



Students will bring the marks back with them from their host university. After translation in accordance with the agreed formula the marks will be the basis for the assessment of the course  which would have been taken in the term in question at Reading and incorporated into their record.

Formative assessment methods:

In accordance with the standard arrangements in the host university.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

40% overall.

Reassessment arrangements:

If a student fails to pass the year at the first attempt there is an opportunity to be re-assessed on one further occasion at the next opportunity in those modules achieving a mark of less than 40%. In this module candidates will be reassessed by coursework only and should resubmit by 1st August in consultation with the module convenor (email directly to economics@reading.ac.uk AND submit via Turnitin on Blackboard).
